Greywei Weimaraners
About Us

The Greywei prefix is made up of three partners, Norma Lacey, Debbie Clarkson and Marcia Kingston. We aim to keep up the high standard that has always been the goal of Greywei and breed dogs with both intelligence and beauty.

We each bring into the breeding, showing and training of  Weimaraners, our own special interest.

Debbie and Marcia enjoy the Show Ring. They choose the puppy at 8 weeks that in their opinion has the best conformation, then put it to the test in the competitive world of dog showing.

Norma likes to put the Greywei puppies to work, to test their ability in the field or the Obedience ring.

Breeding the big grey dogs requires all of us to work together, to choose the right combination, to strive to improve the breed and meet the requirements of the Breed Standard. We want to produce a puppy that can grace a show ring , work in the field or give a family a loving life long companion.

We have bred 16 Show Champions, 1 Dual Champion (Tracking & Show), 2 Tracking Dog Champions,
1 Companion Dog (Obedience), 3 Qualifying Certificates (Retrieving) 2 Endurance Titles, 1 Tracking Search Dog
and a Amercian Junior Hunting Title in the United States.  Most of these titles would not have been achieved without the love and dedication of those who own a Greywei.

Weimaraners came into my life after a lifetime of pet dogs that included a couple of lovely Cocker Spaniels. I put the Cocker Spaniels into Obedience and found that I really enjoyed teaching them even though it was frustrating that they did not enjoy the work as much as I did.

Chancing upon an old English book of Gundog Training by P.R.A. Moxon, I then decided to teach the Cockers to retrieve. This proved no more successful than the Obedience lessons.

This was the motivation for looking for a breed of dog that was versatile, intelligent and trainable. The Weimaraner covered all my requirements, so I obtained my first, a dog named Zeb who became my companion, acquired his Obedience title and Non Slip Retrieving title. I was totally hooked upon the breed.

I then bought Roxy, Bromhund Royal Flush, who totally enjoyed helping me go on fulfilling my enjoyment of a working dog and we included the show ring, where she achieved her Australian Champion award.

It was a natural progression to breeding a litter of puppies with Roxy and so the Prefix “Greywei” was chosen and the first litter of puppies under this prefix that arrived in October 1998.  My enthusiasm for these lovely dogs has not diminished, nor my interest in training puppies through to mature dogs using the ability that has been bred into them over the years.

Debbie

I have always grown up with dogs, intially with  Collie Rough under the 'Dornbrae' prefix with respected judges Mavis O'Neil, Fred Connelly and Peter & Trisha Marcovich.  We also imported the first Japanese Spitz into Australia.  In my earlier years I enjoyed competing in Junior Handlers and in 1983 won the Pal Junior Handler competition at the Royal Brisbane Show.  As you can see from the photo below, and the hairstyles, I have been with dogs for years!

I always had admired the dogs in the Gundog group, initially wanting a Pointer and vowing that when I grew up I would get a dog that I would not have to spend hours grooming!

My teenage years were upon me and somehow boys seemed more important than going to dog shows every weekend, hence I went to less and less shows.

Then I finally did grow up (though some would disagree) and the search was on for my Gundog.  I had approached a few pointer breeders, then one day I saw in the back of a car a weimaraner - what a stunning dog and so I decided that the weimaraner was for me.

I had initially wanted  to do obedience and purchased a weimaraner from Kismaner in Queensland.  Even though the intention was there to do obedience with her,  the bug had caught me again to get back into the showring.   Ch Kismaner Soul Sister 'Mia' achieved her Australian Championship title with ease and we never 'got around' to doing obedience.  I also purchased a boy 'Moontaj Steel Grey Cloud' Harrison who sadly died from bloat.

When I obtained Mia's title, my husband foolishly thought that this was the end of me being away on weekends and my wage being spent on dogs - 'what more could you achieve' ? I needed to get another weimaraner and then another and then another.....

I then got my beloved Cooper - Ch Greydove All The Rage.  We have won together both Best in Group, classes in Group and in Show as well as Best of Breed at Canberra Royal, but  the pinnicle was winning BEST IN SHOW at the Weimaraner Club of Queensland Championship Show in 2000.

I was lucky enough to met Norma Lacey and having the same ideas and beliefs in the future of the weimaraner joined in the Greywei prefix.  In 2006 I asked my dear friend Marcia to join the prefix with Norma and I.  Although Marcia has Cocker Spaniels she has an interest in the Weimaraners and is always there for me.  Marcia showed Ch Greywei Jitter Bug 'Jazz' to her Australian Championship title and both worked well together in the ring.

Along the way I have met some truly loyal friends in Suzanne, John & Rosemary Mayhew from Bromhund Kennels whose dogs have added to our Greywei pedigrees, as well as Sue Norbury from Amarige Weimaraners, who is my travelling companion in the US, Canada and Mexico - Thank you for your beautiful friendship xx

The highlight for me personally, as part of Greywei Kennels, was winning BABY PUPPY IN SHOW at the Weimaraner National in 2005 with our home bred
Ch Greywei All About Me 'Scarlett' and then again at the Weimaraner National in 2010 with another home bred Greywei Summer Buzz 'Louis'.

I have travelled to the UK to Crufts (one of the worlds biggest dog shows) and to the US to the Weimaraner National.  In 2007/2008/2009 returned to the US Weimaraner National as well as the World Dog Show held in Mexico in 2009. In 2010 I attended the Westminster Dog Show in New York at Maddison Square Garden and will return to the US in 2011 to attend the Weimaraner National.

My dogs aren't my whole life, but they make my life whole xxx

Marcia

Dogs have always been an important part of my life. My love of Cocker Spaniels began when I was a child, and continues to this day. I cannot imagine not having one of these beautiful and loyal dogs in my life.

I breed Cocker Spaniels under the “Kingsway” kennel prefix. It is a small kennel that has the aim of breeding and raising Cocker Spaniels that are successful in show, obedience and agility as well as being wonderful companions.

Since 2000 I have titled 5 Cocker Spaniels. These dogs have also achieved considerable success at ‘in group’ and ‘in show’ level. The latest Kingsway pups, ‘Ch Kingsway Touch Of Frost’ Noah and ‘Kingsway Silver Lining’ Daisy (owned in partnership with Debbie) entered the show ring at the end of April 2006 and between them have been awarded multiple class in group and show awards. Early 2007 saw 'Kingsway Touch of Frost' Noah achieve his Australian Championship title! These pups also have the most beautiful temperaments which can be partly attributed to the five formative weeks the litter spent with Norma while I was overseas.

Kingsway also produced the 2005 ACT Companion Dog Club ‘Dog of the Year’, ‘Kingsway Double Jeopardy CDX JD AD’, the first Cocker Spaniel to be awarded this title.

A personal highlight for me was the honour of being asked to join a panel of judges for the 2006 NSW Contest of Cockers.

I have always loved the balanced sporting lines and gentle loving natures of the Gundog breeds. In 2000 I met my wonderful friend Debbie and thereby began my interest in, and sharing of her passion for, Weimaraners.

In 2006 when asked by Debbie and Norma to join the Greywei kennel, I jumped at the chance. We share the same ideals in regards to structure, soundness, health and working ability and yet bring our own ideas, plans and interests which makes it an ever evolving and dynamic partnership.

To begin my Weimaraner showing career, Debbie and Norma gave me an easy one to start.  With her wonderful nature, it was easy to get Jazz’s (Ch Greywei Jitterbug) title in a very short time. In fact, she really got it by herself - I just hung on to the end of the lead! I’m sure they will give me more of a challenge next time.

As well as being an exhibitor, I am a ring steward and also heavily involved in Dog Club administration and have served for a number of years on Breed, Group and All Breeds Clubs Committees in various positions.

My ambition is for both Greywei and Kingsway to continue to achieve success. However, just between you and me, my secret goals are to persuade Norma that you can achieve obedience success with a Cocker Spaniel and that she really does need to have one and also to convince Debbie that it really is fun to arrive at shows early and brush Cocker Spaniels for a couple of hours before the show starts!
